As outlined in Mongolia’s five-year Development Vision for 2021-2025 and the Government of Mongolia’s Action Program for 2020-2024, a key priority is the enhancement of Ulaanbaatar’s transportation logistics system. This involves strategies to alleviate traffic congestion, balance traffic load, implement a demand-based road network, mitigate gridlock, and advance the accessibility, safety, and sustainability of transportation services.

The Ulaanbaatar Sustainable Urban Transport Project

The project aims to develop a comprehensive framework for sustainable urban mobility in Ulaanbaatar, and to reduce congestion, improve road safety, and address climate resilience on selected transport corridors.

Project introduction

Giving priority to pedestrians, cyclists, and passengers on public transportation, the project will establish a standard for safe, efficient, comfortable, and accessible streets for all users in Ulaanbaatar city.

Complete Street

The Complete Streets concept is an established practice in city planning. A Complete Street prioritises not only automobile users, but also ensures the comfort and safety of pedestrians and cyclists.

Environmental and Social activities

The World Bank’s Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF), as well as the accompanying 10 Environmental and Social Standards (ESS) aim to prevent and mitigate any and all environmental and social risks associated with its projects (World Bank, 2016).
